A Brief History on the New Hampshire Colony
The colony was founded in 1638 by John Mason and the land itself was established by John Wheelwright and a few others. It was named after the English county of Hampshire where John Mason was raised. It was located on the Atlantic coast of North America and what apart of the New England Colonies.
New Hampshire was a planned colony and John Mason was given a grant for the land from King James I. John sent settlers to the new territory to create a fishing colony; as he was preparing for his first voyage to the new land he died, though he is still given credit for the discovery. John Wheelwright was the one known for actually establishing a colony there in 1638. In 1641, the Massachusetts Colony gained control of New Hampshire and in 1679, England formed New Hampshire as a separate Royal Colony.
The colony later became known as The Provence of New Hampshire and in 1776 the colony's existence ended because they joined the other 12 out of 13 colonies in the rebellion against Great Britain and became the U.S. State of New Hampshire in 1783.
